Coastlines, slowly

Last updated August 13, 2026

We started Travel Near Sea in 2021 for a simple reason: the writing we wanted to read about coastlines, islands, beaches & swimming mostly did not exist, and what did exist was selling something.

The tone we aim for is unhurried, observant, attentive to weather — we assume you are intelligent, busy, and able to tell when you are being flattered.

What we cover

The site is organised into 6 sections:

  • Coastlines — Stretches of coast worth the journey, and what each one is actually like.
  • Islands — Getting there, staying there, and leaving when the ferry says so.
  • Beaches & Swimming — Water, tides, safety and beaches that reward turning up early.
  • Harbour Towns — Working ports, fishing towns and the places that were never built for visitors.
  • Seasons & Weather — Wind, swell, shoulder seasons and when a coast is at its best.
  • Practicalities — Ferries, timings, costs and the logistics of a trip that ends at the water.

Who writes it

Every article carries a named writer with a profile page, and nothing is published anonymously. You can see the full list on our writers page.

How it is funded

Advertising pays for this site. It does not buy coverage, placement or a favourable word, and our editorial policy sets out exactly how that separation works.

Who publishes it

Travel Near Sea is published by Saltmark Press, a sole proprietorship of Karan Mehta.
